A carefully curated bookshelf has the power to pull a space together and add some extra wow factor.
The question is: How do you bring these blank spaces to life while also keeping them from looking cluttered?
That’s exactly what we’re diving into today. Recently, our friends over at The Spruce reached out to ask for our best tip on decorating your shelf like a design pro.
Here was my response…
The secret is to avoid using too many small items.
My rule is to make sure none of your accessories are smaller than a cantaloupe. When you buy small items, you need more of them to make an impact, and that’s why things end up looking cluttered. The goal is to go for larger accessory items first to fill up the space, then layer in the smaller items as needed. Of course, the size of your accessories isn’t the only thing to consider when styling your shelves. Here are 4 more tips for making your bookshelves look like they were curated by a pro!

1. Vary the Heights and Depths
To keep your shelves looking visually interesting, play with varying heights and depths. Mix tall accessories like vases or planters with shorter stacks of books. Arrange some items towards the back of the shelf and others pushed forward to create depth.

2. Incorporate Texture and Color
In addition to books, look for textural elements like wood, metal pieces, and ceramic objects. The different materials will add visual contrast and warmth. I recommend sticking to a specific color palette, for maximum impact. Just like too many items can cause your shelf to look cluttered, too many different colors can be distracting.

3. Use Wallpaper
You know I’m a sucker for gorgeous wallpapers, and I love using them to line the backs of bookshelves to add interest to a room. If you’re hesitant to add it to your entire space, this is a fabulous way to dip your toe into the beauty of wallpaper!

4. Step Back and Assess
As you’re styling, keep stepping back to check the overall visual balance and flow across the entire bookcase. Sometimes, we can’t see things properly when we are too close to them. By stepping back, you can adjust as needed until you achieve your desired look.
