Recently, my friends at InRegister interviewed me for a piece called “Pet Project: Local design professionals at home with their furry friends.” And I can truly say that I loved the chance to share how my trio of cats—Jack, Tiger, and Gigi—have shaped my approach to home design!
First, I’ll let you in on a secret that I shared with them… Once upon a time, I used to be a dog person. Cats seemed aloof and mysterious to me. But living with these three adorable furballs has completely changed my perspective. And I have to admit, there’s nothing quite like curling up on the sofa at the end of a long day, surrounded by purring cats.

Of course, living with three cats comes with its challenges. Cat hair has become a constant companion, and lint rollers are now essential tools in my home. However, I’ve learned to adapt my design choices to accommodate furry family members without sacrificing style in my own home or my clients’ homes.
In my home, I’ve opted for fabrics that are durable and easy to clean — no delicate silks or intricate embroideries here. Wool rugs have become my go-to; they’re not only beautiful but also a breeze to clean with just soap and water. It’s all about finding that perfect balance between aesthetics and practicality.

Interestingly, my cats have even influenced my color choices. My kitchen renovation, featuring pale blue cabinetry and lilac-colored grasscloth walls, unintentionally matched my ragdoll cat, Jack. This happy accident inspired me to embrace similar hues in other rooms, like the soft purple (Farrow & Ball’s “Calluna No. 270”) in my dining room.

There’s something so special about designing a room that not only looks beautiful but also provides comfort and enjoyment for pets. Whether it’s a cozy nook for a cat to perch or a durable, stylish dog bed that complements the decor, these thoughtful touches make a house truly feel like home.

Remember, great design isn’t just about creating a picture-perfect space. It’s about crafting an environment that supports and enhances your lifestyle… pets and all!
