Design Tips From Rachel - Part 9

The Holidays are officially in full swing!

Whether you're hosting a big feast this year or simply dreaming of upgrading your dining space for future family meals, this week's design tips are all about creating rooms that are beautiful AND ready for real life (cranberry sauce spills included!).

Plus, I'm sharing my secret formula for styling those bookshelves that are ready and waiting for Christmas decorations. Because let's be honest – nothing makes a room feel more finished than well-styled shelves!

Question 1: I’d love to update and elevate our dining space, but I still have young kids. What do you recommend? Should I wait until they are older?

You absolutely can upgrade your space while also accounting for young kids (or other messy family and friends)! Chairs can be covered in high-performance mohair, velvet, or other stain-resistant fabrics. Rugs also come in plenty of options that can be easily maintained. Wool rugs have become my go-to; they’re not only beautiful but also a breeze to clean with just a mild soap and water.

You can balance having a gorgeous room and having a livable space. The point of your home is to support you and your loved ones!

Question 2:  How do you bring blank bookshelves to life while also keeping them from looking cluttered?

The secret is to avoid using too many small items! My rule is to make sure none of your accessories are smaller than a cantaloupe. When you buy small items, you need more of them to make an impact, and that’s why things end up looking cluttered. The goal is to go for larger accessory items first to fill up the space, then layer in the smaller items as needed.
