Relief Should Be a Line Item

I'm going to tell you something the interior design industry doesn't usually lead with: what you're paying for isn't a beautiful room.

The beautiful room is the result. What you're paying for when you hire an interior designer is relief.

Relief from decision fatigue, research, missed details, contractor questions, discontinued items, and mismatched dye lots. What you're paying for is the relief of knowing that these things will be handled by someone with years of experience and knowledge on how to navigate them. Your time - and I cannot stress this enough - is your most valuable resource because it’s the one you cannot and will not get more of. When you envision redesigning your space, you’re not dreaming about the back and forth between a vendor and yourself, trying to return a light fixture that came in damaged while they try to convince you that the return window has closed.

You know who does factor that into every project? Your interior designer. We are skilled at handling so much more than just choosing the pretty pieces that will fill a room, and not only are we masters at it, we love taking this off of your plate so you can spend your time doing things you’d rather be doing!

Every Hour You Spend on This Is an Hour You're Not Spending on Something Else

A design project is made up of hours of research, multiple vendor calls, copious measurement re-checks, damaged items, returns, waiting for samples, making selections, checking stock, obtaining pricing, checking the budget. And that’s not even accounting for the sinking feeling when you realize the dresser you ordered for your bedroom won’t make a 90-degree turn in your hallway, and you have to start over after it took you forever to feel confident enough to decide on that one.

Now think about what you'd prefer to spend your time doing: enjoying your family, your friends…living your life. It’s a luxury to have someone else handle the headaches for you!

The Decisions Are Exhausting (and There Are Thousands of Them)

A full interior design project involves more decisions than most people realize until they're in the trenches. Even small projects require the same level of attention to detail that can accumulate into a full-time job: the grout color, the switch plate finish, the exact height of the sconce above the nightstand, the cabinet hardware, the interior door style, the base and crown molding profile, the correct length of draperies and whether or not they should graze the floor or skim the floor. And all of this needs to be documented in a way that a team of people can then take that information and build from it.

Please hear me when I say: decision fatigue is real. At some point, after enough of those choices, you stop caring whether it's right and just need it done. You will be so overwhelmed by the choices that you’ll eventually give up control and just start saying “that’s fine” to just about anything. That's when the mistakes happen. When you’re depleted and exhausted and ready to just finish up. (My dad loves to say “when you’re in a hurry, go slow.” It took me years to understand why.)

My job is to carry that cognitive load so you don't have to. You make the decisions that require your input and your life context. My team handles the rest.

The Mistakes We Won't Make Are Part of What You're Paying For

This one is harder to see because it's invisible. As an RCL client, you'll never know about the problems that didn't happen and the ones that did! We’re always problem solving and working to make sure the client isn’t bothered when there’s an issue. Our motto is “never blindside a client with a problem; alert them that an issue has been encountered, along with the proposed solution.” What good does it do for us to call the client up and say “they found mold behind your shower wall”? It just causes stress and panic. Instead, we will have talked through that issue with the contractor, found the possible options and how it will affect the project, and then communicate what we think the best course of action is for the client.

We take all of this into account when we begin a new project. We plan so your renovation timeline doesn't blow up by researching lead times before the contractors show up. We triple-check SKUs so that products don’t get ordered in the wrong finish. The space gets measured and a scaled furniture plan drawn before anything gets purchased.

I have been called in to fix a lot of projects that went sideways without a designer involved. The cost of those fixes in money, time, and the misery of living in a space that’s just not right consistently exceeds what a professional design fee would have been.

Hiring a designer isn't a splurge. Not hiring one and then needing damage control, though… that's a waste.

You Get to Be the Client

When you hire a designer, you get to have opinions without having to execute them. You get to say 'I want this room to feel like a long exhale at the end of a hard day' and let someone else figure out what that means in terms of fabric weight, lighting levels, and furniture scale.

You get to walk in at the end and feel relief and excitement, instead of walking in and cataloging everything you had to compromise on because you ran out of time or energy (or both).

The clients who trust the process and let us carry the project are consistently the ones who get the most out of working with us.

So What Are You Really Paying For?

You're paying for expertise and a process that catches problems before they become expensive surprises.

But most of all, you're getting to maintain control of your time. Your evenings and weekends are truly yours because our team has spent Monday through Friday executing at the highest level. Your mental bandwidth gets a break, allowing you to run a business, raise a family, and take time to relax. You don’t have to stress about the details because that’s our job.

It might not be a line item on a proposal, but I’m convinced that relief is the most valuable thing on there.
