Personal Style is Serious Business

Interior design is an aesthetics-driven business. Let’s face it: nobody hires a designer because they trust our spreadsheets (although ours are immaculate). They hire us because they trust our eye, and the first place they test that eye is on us, before they’ve ever seen a single mood board.
So when I meet someone for the first time, they’re giving my whole look a once-over. They’re looking for evidence that my personal style is as deliberate about the details as my design work. (And that includes the occasion when their first encounter with our team is on social media. We stay camera-ready!)
It comes with the territory: if I want to be taken seriously as someone with taste, expertise, and standards, my appearance has to be consistent with that claim. And here’s why I take it so seriously: looking like a million bucks is soft power. It tells a potential client that they can trust me to guide them to a better end result than they could have found on their own. That their investment of time and money is safe in my hands.
Dress Like You Work at RCL
Since I began sharing my OOTDs on our social media, the response has been overwhelming. (We’re all just girls at heart!) Don’t be surprised if you pop into our office unexpectedly and find us dressed to the nines. We take our image very seriously, and we love curating a whole world of beauty for you!
Here’s how to dress like you’re one of the team:
1. Book a color analysis with me.
I really can’t stress enough how much more confident I feel knowing my best colors. Not to mention, I now have an entire closet of separates from my palette, meaning they all coordinate beautifully together. It’s a lifeline for days like today, when I had no idea what I wanted to wear, and I reached for items I’ve never paired together before that ended up looking great together. Everyone at RCL knows their season, and we love days where we all show up in our “power color” without planning it.
2. Shop for and wear your palette exclusively for three months.
You will be amazed at how many compliments you begin receiving from total strangers and friends alike! It makes it so much easier to begin weeding out the items that don’t flatter you when you get used to being in your best colors.
3. Build a capsule wardrobe.
You need these items in your closet to create a strong foundation: Structured button-down blouses, cardigans and crewneck sweaters, tailored trousers, tops with interesting details, midi-length skirts, blazers and jackets
4. Follow the Three-Piece Rule (if you don’t do anything else, do this!).
Ralph Lauren built an entire empire on this formula. To look super chic, your look can’t stop at just a top and bottom or just a dress and shoes. You need a third piece that adds interest: a tailored blazer, a sweater tied over the shoulders, a great belt, or a scarf adding color. That third piece is what takes an outfit from “fine” to “fabulous.” It’s such a simple hack! It creates a pulled-together look that manages to still be effortless.
5. Ignore labels and look at design.
Remember: none of this is about the name in the tag. My most complimented outfit in the last month included a $29 skirt from Amazon! While I certainly follow high fashion designers and am inspired by them, my priorities are more centered on having interesting style and wearing things that make me smile, regardless of the label. When I find a brand I really love, I typically invest heavily in their pieces because I know they work for my lifestyle and have become part of my personal style. (And I rarely get rid of those items.) These lines are as accessible as Target and Amazon, and as high-end as… well… couture (depending on the moment and occasion, of course)!
Try out these rules for yourself and drop me a line if you begin to notice a difference in how you feel! And of course, I’m always here for color analysis sessions - August is already full, so if you’re ready to take the plunge, you can snag a spot in September by emailing info@rachelcannonlimited.com with the subject line: Color Analysis
