The Summer I Finally Figured Out My Colors

Here’s something I never thought I’d admit publicly: I used to shop like I was throwing spaghetti at the wall. Pretty color? Into the cart. On sale? Obviously meant to be mine. Trending on Instagram? Well, clearly I needed it.

My red? Poppy red! A bright, orangey red with deep intensity! Shop similar styles below:

Then something shifted this summer that completely changed how I approach both my closet and my design work. I dove deep into seasonal color analysis, and it’s been the most clarifying thing I’ve done for myself in years.

Rachel Cannon in yellow
This season’s trend was “butter yellow” but it isn’t in my season. My yellows are more vibrant and saturated! You can shop this look below.

Looking back at the bestsellers from my ShopMy that I shared in June and July (you can scroll through and shop them all  just below), there’s this gorgeous thread running through everything: they’re all in my True Spring palette. That coral lipstick that sold out three times is classic True Spring. Those golden woven flats everyone’s been asking about are perfect for my warm undertones. Even that emerald pendant necklace that had you all in my DMs - it’s like my season hand-picked it.

The thing is, I consciously curated these picks around my True Spring color palette. Once I started living in my colors, everything else just felt… wrong. Anything black and on sale used to be an automatic purchase. Now I know I have better neutrals than black, and that they won’t wash me out completely. The money I’ve saved by not buying beautiful things that weren’t my beautiful things? My bank account is grateful, and so is my limited closet space. Think about it - how often have you been shopping, with no clear goal, but hoping that this purchase will be the one that revolutionizes your entire wardrobe? Only to find when you get home that you already own that 12 other pairs of black pants just like the ones you just bought…

Rachel Cannon in canteloupe
Canteloupe is one of my favorite colors, but not one I had ever purchased before. Now I can’t get enough of it! Snag it, and the beauty products I used to create this look, below!

What’s been most surprising is how this color knowledge has elevated my design work too. After 21 years working as a professional interior designer, I thought I understood color. But there’s something about identifying the exact undertones and intensity that make you look radiant that translates directly to creating spaces that feel alive rather than just pretty. I’ve already seen the shift in my design work with this newfound understanding of color - it’s like I’m working with two goals in mind: introduce color into the space that adds interest, but also feels like it suits the inhabitants.

Discovering how to wear colors that were close, but not exactly in my palette, was a revelation. This green is technically too cool for me, but the off white background is perfectly in my season. Shop it below!

The confidence boost has been unreal. I never used to share outfit photos publicly because I didn’t feel like I had a true grasp on my personal style, even though I felt cute most days. Now that I’m wearing colors that make my skin glow and my eyes pop, sharing feels less like vulnerability and more like sharing a really good secret.

Rachel Cannon in primrose yellow
Primrose yellow was another color I’d never have picked up, for fear it would look bad with my blonde hair. Turns out, it’s the perfect yellow for me. Workwear does NOT have to be dull! Shop this vibrant look below.

Speaking of secrets… I’ve been getting so many messages asking how I figured this all out. The science behind it fascinates me (the lighting, the undertones, the way certain colors can literally change how people perceive your features), and I’m realizing there’s this beautiful intersection between understanding color for interiors and understanding it for yourself. Let’s just say I might have some thoughts brewing about helping others discover their own color story—both in their homes and their wardrobes. Because once you see the difference the right colors make, there’s really no going back.

Rachel Cannon in Canteloupe, Lilac, Brown Sugar, and Cream
Another color combination I find fascinating (wouldn’t it be gorgeous in a room?!) but one I’d probably have shied away from before. Canteloupe, Lilac, Brown Sugar, and Cream - all in my season! (Someone needs this combo in their home! How dreamy…)

For now, though, I’m just grateful these bestsellers found their way to you. Every single piece has that True Spring magic, and I have a feeling they’re going to make some of you very, very happy.

If you’re curious about ShopMy, take a look at my storefront HERE, where I keep all the things I’m genuinely obsessed with. From the design pieces that make me do a little happy dance when they arrive, to the organizing products that have saved my sanity more times than I can count. No more screenshot-and-swipe-up gymnastics or me frantically typing the same links in DMs at 11 PM because someone needs to know where I got that lamp right now. I can keep them all neatly organized for you and you can come back anytime to see what’s new.

Go browse around and see what catches your eye! Fair warning: I may have gotten a little carried away in the fashion sections, but cute clothes are my love language.

A mint green and yellow eyelet dress was a savior for midweek day-to-night necessities! I changed out the shoes and accessories and made it do double duty!
